Hutto was founded in 1857 by James E. Hutto, a wealthy Texas cattleman. The community grew in bits and pieces and James Hutto became postmaster in 1877. Before the Great Depression of the 1920s, the population of Hutto had reached a high of 900. Nevertheless, by the 1960s the number of residents living in Hutto had declined to less than 450. Today, with a population exceeding 11,000, Hutto has achieved the reputation of a community with the heart of a small town and the foresight of a growing and successful community.
Many residents claim Hutto is the center of the universe and their claims may not be far from the truth. Hutto is located only 20 minutes from the state's capital and is centrally located on Hwy 79 between Round Rock and Taylor. The community is experiencing incredible growth and the town is handling this rapid growth well. Many in town see the value in its small town roots and atmosphere and great care has been taken to preserve the small town community feel. Residents also see the value in growth. Because of this, millions are being spent to improve roads in and around Hutto and the business sector has grown with the population.
Education is another important part of life in Hutto. The Hutto Independent School District is comprised of 6 campuses that are responsible for the education of some 3,000 students. Their motto is "Moving forward...Reaching Goals" and that is exactly what Hutto ISD has done. Students score well in both national and state testing and the District itself has achieved gold recognition status from the state of Texas.
