The area known as Driftwood Texas was settled as early as 1850 but didn't really get started until the 1880s as a supply center for nearby farms and ranches. The town was then known as Liberty Hill and soon grew to include a post office, a school, two churches, a cotton gin, and a general store. Despite its ups and downs Driftwood maintained a welcoming atmosphere but in 1990 the town had a population of only 21.
Today, Driftwood is a prosperous, small but growing Hill Country community with attitude. It has over 2000 residents who take pride in their homes and their community. Recent growth in Driftwood has topped 19% yearly as more and more people are seeing the benefits of this small community. The town has a median home price of over $500,000 which is well above the state median home price and new home builders are starting to see the opportunity to create beautiful homes on large lots where style and architecture are appreciated.
These home builders are creating communities that seem to blend naturally with the area. Homes are set back from the street; they have green lawns and an abundance of plantings that provide these homes and communities with an established feel. Many architectural styles are mingled together for an eye pleasing and harmonious atmosphere and new owners feel an immediately sense of belonging with their surroundings as well as their community.
Hays Independent School District provides education to the children of Driftwood Texas. The Hays ISD has 17 campuses and an excellent and ongoing reputation of meeting and exceeding state education requirements while providing the very best education possible. Faculty, teachers and parents all form a cohesive team that challenges the students to thrive not only in the classroom but on the sports field and in the community. This approach broadens the minds and bodies as well as spirit of the students of Hays ISD and the student's test scores reveal this approach is working.
In May 2008, the average sales price of a single family home or condo in Driftwood was $366,198. This information is from the MLS, and while deemed reliable, is not guaranteed.|
