Located about 33 miles northeast of the Twin Cities, Wyoming Minnesota is a cozy little community that enjoys life at a more leisurely pace. There are no large lakes or rivers in the area, just a lot of rolling plains. The word "Wyoming" is Algonquin in origin and means "extensive meadows." The area was named after the original Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania. Settled in 1855 by German and Dutch, Wyoming has made her place in Minnesota history as a major transportation thoroughfare and rest stop on the way to Duluth. First it was ox carts, then the stagecoach line, and finally the St. Paul Duluth Railroad came through in 1868, placing the first railroad station out of St. Paul at Wyoming. Wyoming became a city in 1974.
Homes here vary greatly. Many are throwback farm houses from the early 1900s, replete with the corresponding acreage (supply your own cows and horses). Some homes are of a newer ilk, many post World War II and 1980s ramblers. Wyoming hasn't experienced the kind of sprawl that has begun to reach other outlying communities such as Hugo, Rogers and Forest Lake, but if transportation continues to evolve past the interstate, it's likely that this area that relied heavily upon business generated by travelers on their way up or down the state, could see a reawakening in the future. The best bet for shopping and dining is probably 20 miles due south, in White Bear Lake. Both "Old" and "New" Downtowns offer many unique and eclectic, as well as commercial and franchised, shopping and dining options.
Wyoming does possess a couple of gems of its own, namely The Nesting Grounds. It's not only a comfortable neighborhood coffeehouse but a movement that began in 1986 when two Wyoming residents decided they wanted to open a fair trade coffee business, both profitable and conscionable. Stop in for a great cup of java; it'll boast your energy and you'll have done your good deed for the day-all before you've even had your morning coffee! Also, check out The Cornerstone Pub. They've been serving up brew and food for over 50 years in this tiny community; come try any of the excellent meaty entrees like prime rib or the steak special. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the rich ambience and the reasonable check at the end of the evening! This is a rural community that could accommodate a family looking for space to spread out, start up a hobby farm or just escape from the rigors of city living.
