These five communities are located approximately 23 to 33 miles north of the Twin Cities metro area. These are largely settled communities. There are no interstates running through these cities, so they're very much off the beaten path. They probably originated when river and railroad travel determined the location of cities as the tracks run right through Cedar and Bethel, and the Rum River runs through St. Francis.
There are a number of smaller wetland areas located here including Lake George, Swan Lake, Neds Lake, Deer Lake, Sandshore Lake, and Minard Lake. These lakes offer opportunities for outdoor recreation as well as beautiful locations to build or find a new home. The Lake George Regional Park Reserve is 270 acres and a popular recreation spot with families and young adults, featuring volleyball, swimming, biking, boating and picnic areas.
New trails offer access to woodland, lake, and wetland areas, and a YMCA day camp was established on the grounds in 2000. Other community and neighborhood parks in the area feature the usual fare: skateboard park, basketball/tennis courts, sports fields, playground equipment and ice rinks. The Rum River is a unique feature and makes canoeing and kiaking an accessible pastime.
Homes in East Bethel tend to be a bit newer than those of her neighbors, but generally the homes range from post World War II ramblers to 1980s split-levels, modern walk-out ramblers and multi-levels. There are town home developments and spectacular lakeshore properties-a wide range for almost any budget and taste. These communities tend to attract young families and retain their middle-aged adults who have sent their children off to school-it's probably not the place to meet your future mate unless you happen to both be caddies at one of the area golf courses; you'll locate a green a lot easier than a dance club in these parts.
Community activities tend to be family and school-oriented. There is also a thriving senior center and active older adult population, centralized in East Bethel. They emphasize community outreach, fundraising and some fun events and activities too. Ironically, East Bethel is also where you'll find your area biker bar: Fatboys Bar and Grill. They feature live music on weekends and a full bar and menu. Besides the local convenience store stocking the necessities, your best bet for major retail and entertainment are neighboring communities: Elk River, Rogers, and Coon Rapids.
In June 2007, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in St. Francis, MN was $216,275. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
