North Branch is located approximately 45 miles north of Minneapolis, up Interstate 35W north. In 1901, the community of North Branch annexed itself from the surrounding area, known simply as "Branch." The village of North Branch was more urban and centrally located within the original 35-square mile rural.

In 1961, Branch became a village, still surrounding the village of North Branch. Both communities grew rapidly in after the completion of Interstate Highway 35W in 1969, North Branch continued to be the more densely-populated area while Branch became home to many commuters with farms comprising the remainder of the area.

In 1974, both communities became statutory cities. Over the next 20 years, the cities went through a series of proposals and hearings about combining the cities. Finally, in November 1994 North Branch as we know it today came into existence.

Today, the city is largely comprised of agricultural land, followed by rural residential areas and single-family residences. Future land use development is slated to create single-family residences throughout most of the rural residential areas and more industrial use space. Nearby recreational opportunities include the North Branch Golf Club, fourteen parks and Sunrise Prairie Trail for biking and running.

North Branch's closest neighbors are the cities of Cambridge, Harris and Stacy. North Branch is not far from the Twin Cities, but feels far-removed. It's a simple, open community based on traditional values that hasn't changed all that much since its early farming beginnings.
