Maple Lake is located about 50 miles northwest of the Twin Cities, near Annandale. Early pioneers came to the area of Maple Lake in the 1850s to farm; Maple Lake was established in 1858 as a town site with the creation of a mail facility. The Irish migrating from Clare County Ireland flocked to Maple Lake in the late 1850s and early 1860s.
Patrick O'Loughlin Sr. arrived to the area with one of these early groups of Irish immigrants, and he would later become the pioneer founder of the present day village of Maple Lake. Further development of the city spurred the area's farming industry and the expansion of the "Soo Line" railroad through the city as well as the opening of a grain elevator in 1889. Additional industries to the area included dairy farming and lumber milling. Maple Lake became a city in 1890.
Since 1990, both population and business activity have been growing rapidly-today, Maple Lake houses over 100 businesses. Contributing factors to this growth include renewed interest in industrial and commercial developments in the area and the arrival of new residents because of the community's proximity to sprawling Minneapolis and St. Cloud.
Today, Maple Lake is a mix of residential, business and light industrial areas. Jude Industrial Park, established in the 1970s, includes a number of businesses and continues to expand; recent additions include Rhino Roto Mold, Elletson Manufacturing, Product Technologies Inc., Dental Resources Inc., KWM Manufacturing and H & H Sports. In addition to the businesses, Maple Lake houses a municipal airport. Residents of Maple Lake can find a great shopping district in neighboring Buffalo, a few miles south. Plans are currently underway to accommodate additional residential, commercial and industrial development. Maple Lake itself is largely settled with lakeside homes, privately owned shoreline and docks.
Maple Lake's biggest celebration, owing to its Irish heritage, is the St. Patrick's Day Festival and features a gala, craft fair, "Irish Scamper" 5K run, parade, and royalty coronation. Maple Lake is also particularly responsive to the needs of its seniors. With the establishment and subsequent addition to Maple Manor, a senior housing facility, the City strives to serve its seniors and keep them involved in the community.
In June 2007, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Maple Lake, MN was $193,914. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
