Shakopee, located approximately 23 miles southwest of Minneapolis, is situated on the Minnesota River. The city began as a booming river town, and was incorporated in 1857. So-named after Chief Shakopee of the Teenatahotonwa Dakota Indian tribe, remnants of the rich, native history in this area include the 2,000 year old burial mounds located in Memorial Park, near the Minnesota River.
Current-day Shakopee is a highly active and family-oriented community. One only has to look at the abundant entertainment options that are presented and the types of people they serve. Shakopee possesses one of the most impressive community centers in the area-designed and built to truly serve the residents. It includes a fitness center, indoor track and basketball courts; Enigma Teen Center-a nightclub-type atmosphere for teenagers to enjoy live music, DJ dance parties, PlayStation2, X-Box and Nintendo gaming. Nearby is the Tier I outdoor Skate Park. Kids' summer activities include "Adventures in Summer," single day field trips and camps. Youth sports such as T-ball, Near-ball, Dance, Golf, LaCrosse, Swimming Lessons, and Soccer are also great opportunities for families to get out together and get active. Adult sports leagues are seasonal and include basketball, volleyball, softball and kickball.
Neighborhoods in this community resemble some of the older, first-ring suburbs as there is an even mix of older, rambler-syle homes in a more functional trend, fixer-uppers and humble split-levels, and more modern and ornate housing developments including condos, town homes and senior villages. When driving through the neighborhoods, one is perplexed by the inordinate number of rocks and boulders prominently featured on many lawns and boulevards-bringing to mind the question of whether they were simply too unwieldy to move, or if the city and residents actually placed them there for aesthetic value.
In June 2007, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Shakopee, MN was $245,217. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
