As indicated by the name, this city is situated around beautiful Prior Lake (over 1,650 acres), approximately 25 minutes from The Twin Cities. Prior Lake is currently located on what was once Mdewakanton Sioux land before it became a farming and recreational area for European settlers in the 1870s. The Native American culture and history is still prevalent in names of streets and buildings, as well as historical geographic features and landmarks.
The city has a strategic development plan to meet growth benchmarks by the year 2030 to continue to offer a high quality of life to its growing population of residents, and preserve the unique tradition and culture from which it was born. Some of these goals include continued development of the Lakefront Park area, growth of Downtown Prior Lake retail and business districts, and continually improving public transit and transportation systems that link up Prior Lake to the Twin Cities.
Prior Lake enjoys a mix of retail, entertainment, social, office, light industrial, high-tech, light manufacturing, and service business opportunities. New housing developments including town homes, single-family split levels, rambler-styles, and senior housing are constantly breaking ground, with an emphasis on environmentally friendly planning, open spaces and easy access to transit and transportation.
One of the gems of the city is its park and trail system, an integrated 62 miles of trail that accesses each of the city's 45 parks. In the center of it all is Prior Lake, a recreational hot spot for boating, sailing, water skiing, sunning and swimming at Watzl's Beach or Sand Point Beach, and fishing off the pier. Improvement continues to be made to Lakefront Park and the many access points around Prior Lake.
Prior Lake is a very family-oriented community with an emphasis on youth sports, family activities and intergenerational education. Just look to YMCA Camp Kici Yapi to provide your child(ren) with a traditional day camp experience consisting of archery, swimming, canoeing, horseback riding and rock wall climbing; or sign the kids up for a summer youth soccer league. Prior Lake really is a great place to live, work and have fun.
In October 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Prior Lake, MN was $344,975. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
