The area of Powderhorn is just south of Phillips community. Powderhorn's central feature is Lake Powderhorn in Powderhorn Park, the city's largest neighborhood park spanning 65 acres and featuring Bandstand, ball fields, courts, fishing dock, ice rink, walking paths, picnic areas with grills, horseshoe pits, a community center with teen center and playground. Corcoran and Standish neighborhoods, in Powderhorn, border the recently-completed light rail and both communities are seeing some commercial re-development on that light rail corridor.
This community is home to Whittier neighborhood which boasts amenities such as the Art Institute and Children's Theater Company, most of Eat Street, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, the Jungle Theater, Washburn-Fair Oaks "Mansion" District, and Hennepin History Museum. Whittier experienced major upheaval with the arrival of Interstate 35W in the 1960s that resulted in loss of permanent residents to the suburbs. The neighborhood presently has a neighborhood action plan that maps out a strategy to continue to improve the neighborhood and attract residents back to the area.
Single-family residences are interspersed relatively evenly with multi-family rental homes and low-rise buildings but the community is striving to increase single-family owned residences particularly in the Powderhorn and Whittier neighborhoods. Condos are also being developed in the Whittier neighborhood. The population is diverse, including residents of African-American, Asian, European, Latino, Somali, Tibetan and Scandinavian cultures. Powderhorn community is within easy walking or bussing distance to downtown Minneapolis.
In June 2007, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Powderhorn, MN was $172,078. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
