The Longfellow community is located along the Mississippi River and the community takes full advantage of this unique feature with paved running and biking trails and dirt paths that wind down along the shoreline. Another unique feature about this community is the existence of the light rail creating its western border and connecting southern suburb Bloomington at the Mall of America to downtown Minneapolis. A transit station is conveniently located at Lake Street and Highway 55. Lake Street, a main thoroughfare and commercial corridor, cuts across the upper one-third of the community and Minnehaha Park, including Minnehaha Falls and Lock and Dam Number 1, anchor the southern corner.
Longfellow is predominantly residential with some industrial areas along Hiawatha and the light rail, and some commerce, mainly service-oriented businesses and some restaurants, along Lake Street.
Longfellow community boasts single-family and multi-family homes and a large concentration of rental home units in Longfellow neighborhood. Most of the homes along the River have been upgraded substantially, with re-development moving west on a block-by-block basis, capturing the more modest homes.
The population ranges from long-time residents who raised their families here to a more transient population, young people going to school nearby who like to take advantage of quick access to the light rail or West River Road to access the U of M campus or downtown. The neighborhoods populations is diverse. Businesses along Lake Street cater to Spanish-speaking customers, from restaurants to convenience stores to car lots.
In October 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Longfellow was $191,583. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
