Plymouth is located about 12 miles northwest of Minneapolis, between Medicine Lake and Lake Minnetonka. The city got its start in 1855 with a gristmill and a few years later schools, churches, a post office and a hotel by 1863. Around 1880 farming became the trade of most settlers in the area while roads were being constructed across the city, improving access to neighboring resolrt communities as well as the major bodies of water bookending Plymouth.
Today, Plymouth is an ideal blend of well-planned residential, business and commercial-industrial areas that provide more than 51,000 jobs in the city. Priority has been placed on creating and maintaining a high quality, diverse park system that includes 80 miles of interconnecting trails and over 1,000 acres of park land, diverse recreation facilities such as ball fields, ice rinks, picnic areas and a skate park, and natural open spaces even as the population continues to expand.
Any person of any age with any ability level can get involved in the many sports, education and fine arts offerings that the city provides including: classes, concerts, events, trips, team sports and sport instruction. Special recreation programs are provided for seniors and people with disabilities in cooperation with Senior Community Services and Reach for Resources.
Plymouth also prides itself on an extensive Volunteer Program that serves a variety of needs throughout the community. Plymouth is somewhat less the social and recreation scene when compared to her neighbors to the west, the hot spots around Lake Minnetonka: Excelsior, Wayzata and Minnetonka. Still, Plymouth offers plenty of parks and programs and a friendly community feeling to satisfy a family.
This is another relatively upscale area where it's not uncommon to find high-end, luxury housing subdivisions and town homes centered around a community playground or putting green. You'll also find some lakeside properties at Medicine Lake and a general scattering of multi-levels, split-levels and ramblers located in more mature neighborhoods throughout the community.
In June 2007, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Plymouth, MN was $301,310. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
