Medicine Lake is a very small, tight-knit community just outside Minneapolis, surrounded by booming suburbs such as Wayzata, Plymouth, New Hope and Golden Valley. The city of Medicine Lake is actually located on the large peninsula jutting out into the lake of the same name, the second largest lake in the Twin Cities. Medicine Lake is just minutes from Downtown Minneapolis and takes advantage of neighboring communities' events, programming and schools.
Like most lakeside settlements, the Medicine Lake community was originally comprised of many city-dwellers who made the lakeside a summer retreat. There were also some local year-round farmers and the two factions didn't see eye-to-eye on a lot of issues in those early days. The Luce Line came through in 1914, providing a little more exposure but the city never experienced a significant housing or industrial boom like many other communities in the area.
Today, Medicine Lake remains a laid back, somewhat sleepy community with fast access to the neighboring suburbs and the Twin Cities via Highway 169 and Olson Memorial Parkway. Because of the city's location on the lake peninsula, it's been insulated from a lot of outside development that comes with mass transportation upgrades like the one that is in progress for Highway 169.
As expected, recreation centers on the lake; take advantage of beaches, fishing piers and boating. There are many upscale homes in this area, luxurious walkout ramblers with lakefront property. This would be the area in which to relocate if you want to get off the map a bit, but not actually go too far from the convenience of Minneapolis and St. Paul.
This is an area for empty-nesters, maybe even those wanting to upgrade in their retirement years and settle in their dream home in a slower-paced community. If you can't catch your dinner from your backyard, you'll have to travel a short distance to neighboring communities to grab a bite, as well as shop. This is a small community, necessitated by its limited land resources, a city that is not looking towards much expansion or new development. You can be assured that by and large, "what you see is what you get" here.
