The Macalaster Groveland District Council is one of seventeen neighborhood district councils in St. Paul formed in 1975 to advise the St. Paul City Council on issues related to the development of its area, as well as city and state issues.
Macalester-Groveland is an upscale residential neighborhood boasting a mix of middle-aged families and students with the presence of two affluent post-secondary institutions, Macalester College and the University of Saint Thomas. Macalaster Groveland includes the scenic East River Parkway along the Mississippi River that features walking and biking paths atop the 100-foot-tall bluffs that comprise the riverbank.
The neighborhood features early twentieth-century-style housing, the grandest versions of which are situated atop lush, mature properties with views of the Mississippi River and quick access to bike paths and running routes along the River. Homes become somewhat more modest as the distance from the River increases, but all areas of this community are quite well-maintained and respectable; even the student housing around the campuses are converted mansions and Victorian-style brick structures with ivy crawling across them.
This neighborhood has an active Community Council that hosts events such as an annual battle of the bands, spring plant share, National Night Out, and alley garden awards to name a few. The neighborhood is served by two community centers: Edgcumbe and Groveland Recreation Centers feature a meeting room, racquetball courts, kitchens, craft room, multi-purpose room, gymnasiums, warming rooms, exercise room, tennis courts, play areas, ball fields and programming for children, adults and seniors.
For a more refined recreational experience, there's the Town and Country Club. Established in 1888, this venue claims to be the birthplace of golf in Minnesota and boasts elegant grounds including a golf course, pool and tennis courts. Nearby shopping and dining can be found at the boutique-dominated commercial strips located on Selby, Cretin and Cleveland Avenues, just north of the neighborhood. Go towards the college campuses to find shops like cafes and late-night coffee shops catering to the needs of the local student population.
This neighborhood, with its lovely River views and eclectic mix of families and academics, would be a lovely place to relocate a family and possibly invest in your life-long home.
