Wayzata is located approximately 12 miles west of Minneapolis. The first people in this area were the Mdewakanton Sioux Nation. In 1852 two pioneer families settled on the present site of Wayzata. A town site was platted and a general store, sawmill, post office, and a log schoolhouse were erected. Recent history paints Wayzata as a resort town until around 1890 when the city-folk left for newer and further removed northern locales.
Modern-day Wayzata features strip mall shopping to meet the daily needs of residents, while the downtown lakeside commerce focuses on fashion, unique and novelty gifts, jewelry, antiques and dining. The small-town feel slowly declined in the '70s when newly widened Highway 12 made the Twin Cities more accessible and brought more traffic to the area. While primarily residential, Wayzata also houses some office buildings and retail.
There's no doubt that among Minnesota natives, living in Wayzata intuits a certain social status. The homes here, especially along the shore are some of the most magnificent in the state. You'll find some very unique, modern and contemporary, chalet-style, colonial revival and mammoth cottages along the lake. This community is developing housing and town home subdivisions at a rapid rate, so you could snag a new and luxurious rambler or wide open town home.
Interestingly, there are also some old cabins and cottages left over from the earlier resort days; discover a great little starter home at a more modest price with plenty of land to expand or if you felt really ambitious, scrap it and start over on a prime lot just blocks from the lake. There is a wide variety for all tastes and prices. Young professionals will enjoy the recreational and social atmosphere around the Lake as well as the proximity to Downtown Minneapolis, and families will enjoy the Lake, parks, good school system and safe suburban sprawl that Wayzata has to offer.
In June 2007, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Wayzata, MN was $773,527. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
