The cities of Shorewood along with Excelsior are thriving communities located about 20 minutes east of downtown, Minneapolis. Excelsior is a uniquely successful blend of old and new. Founded in 1853 by colonists from New York, present-day Excelsior is the recreation and entertainment hub of the South Lake Minnetonka area with its restored Downtown district that includes specialty and antique shops along with theater, dining and a bed-and-breakfast inn.
Indicative of the city, each winter there's a tree lighting event that takes place downtown and includes carolers, a pageant, and of course, Santa Claus. Adding to the appeal is, of course, the beaches, shores and access points to beautiful Lake Minnetonka. The Southwest Regional Light Rail Transit Trail is a favorite of bicyclists and walkers and passes through downtown Excelsior. The Commons Pak is located at the north end of town is and includes a swimming beach, playground, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, and picnicking. There are a number of annual community events that attract thousands of visitors to the city, primarily the Art in the Park, Fourth of July Festivities, and Apple Day.
Impress out-of-town guests at the swank Minnetonka Country Club and in the summertime, send the kids to nearby YMCA day camp, Camp Christmastree located on Christmas Lake, where they can enjoy traditional activities like arts and crafts, horseback riding, swimming and archery in a safe, nurturing environment. Of the two cities, Shorewood is the more family-friendly while Excelsior offers more convenient access to Lake Minnetonka commerce and recreation for those so-inclined to take advantage.
Look for upscale, luxury mansions (indicative of the entire Lake Minnetonka region) on the shoreline and homes to incrementally decrease in size and price as you make your way inward towards more land-locked neighborhoods. There is a wide range of homes and styles to choose from, from the quaint "starter" rambler to the completely finished lakeside dream home. Whichever you choose, you can still take advantage of the friendly and bustling community in which you'll live.
In October 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Shorewood, MN was $1,255,000. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
