Independence is a rural community located about 25 miles west of Minneapolis, and situated between Lake Rebecca and Baker Park Reserves. Independence is proud of its rural landscape and farming heritage. It's practically unknown to the rest of the state. Its claim to fame around the day camp circuit is that its home to one of the YMCA's premier camps, Camp Ihduhapi, located on Lake Independence. This is horse land. In fact, the Twin Cities Polo Club play games at their official grounds here nearly every Sunday afternoon in the summer. Come to the city and check out the Polo Classic, held on the first Sunday in August--spread out a picnic lunch and enjoy the game. The Shriners' mounted unit also boards their horses in Independence.
Independence is described as a "gem" of a rural city, "in the heart of an exploding metropolis." The landscape here is dotted with farms, unique homes, country churches, lakes and ponds, rolling hills, wetlands and large stands of wooded areas. Baker Park and Rebecca Park Reserves are located nearby, part of the Three-Rivers Park District. Baker Park is 2,700 acres that includes boat launches, picnic areas, an 11,000 square foot creative play area, snowmobile trails, hiking trails, campgrounds, a wilderness settlement, winter camping and snowshoeing. At Rebecca Park view Trumpeter swans, enjoy hiking trails, snowmobiling, ice fishing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking, swimming, horse trails, campsites, boat rental, and fishing.
For more refined outdoor recreation, there's the award-winning Windsong Farm Golf Club, a private golf facility in the southwestern corner of Independence. It was designed by Tom Lehman and John Fought and opened in 2004 to rave reviews by Golf Digest Magazine.
Neighboring communities include Loretto to the northeast, another small community with a number of quaint shops, restaurants and taverns; and Independence to the west, boasting a shopping center. Maple Plain is a few miles to the east and boasts similar characteristics and amenities as Independence.
There are some brand new, luxury homes in the area but by and large, it's an older selection of walkout ramblers, country homes and farm properties with all the accompanying land. This is a nice, safe little community in which to raise a family. There are some plans for growth and development over the next few years and would probably be a great place to stake a claim now, before everyone else discovers this hidden "gem."
In October 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Independence, MN was $620,000. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
