Mahtomedi is a lakeside community located 23 miles northeast of Minneapolis on the eastern shore of White Bear Lake, in Washington County. Residents enjoy the community's small town charm, lakeside amenities and close proximity to the rest of the metropolitan area.
Mahtomedi has been a summer retreat since its inception. The city was founded around 1900 as a Chautauqua community, when visitors would come to the east shore of White Bear Lake for recreation, lectures, music and a period of reflection. Later, Wildwood Amusement Park was built by the streetcar company to give Twin Cities residents a reason to ride to the end of the line. At about the same time, summer homes and cottages began to be built as Mahtomedi became a resort and vacation destination for everyone--even Ma Barker and her gang spent time here when they were in town.
Today, Mahtomedi has grown into a year-round community, still focused on its greatest recreational asset: White Bear Lake. There are many parks offering both recreational opportunities as well as natural settings. Also, see the many trails for running and biking, including the scenic and historic Streetcar Trail.
Mahtomedi's trail system is also well-connected to the County and regional trail system with the Gateway Trail located immediately south, and several golf courses in neighboring communities a short drive away. There are also a variety of restaurants, many situated along the expansive lake, to take advantage of. Maplewood Mall in neighboring Maplewood offers big box and commercial retailers, and across the lake in the city of White Bear Lake is a large, historic downtown shopping district.
One of the family-friendly community events enjoyed by all is the annual Skating Party at the District Education Center Ice Rinks. Residents and community members partake in hayrides, music and treats by a bonfire. Housing here tends to be single-family models with many upscale and expansive homes, and well-preserved mature estates on the shore. Off the lake, there are more modest single-story ramblers and newly developed town homes and condos. Mahtomedi is a quaint community that will continue to see growth as the Twin Cities Metro area develops.
In June 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Mahtomedi, MN was $323,951. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
