Hugo is a city on the verge of becoming a suburb. It's seen major development in recent years with families selling off vast amounts of farm land to make way for housing subdivisions. With a re-development plan for Downtown Hugo in the works that would provide a community center, improved park facilities, traditional residential blocks, mixed-use development for housing, offices and retail and commercial uses, and senior housing on the lake, the city is sure to look very different in a few years and become even more centralized.
Hugo is located about 27 miles northeast of Minneapolis, 15 miles north of St. Paul, placing it at an easy commute for those who work in "the City." Centerville follows suit on most counts, including plans for a re-developed downtown. The cities can be considered mirror-images facing each other across Interstate 35E.
Homes here range from some older, throwback colonial designs to the numerous split level, ramblers and two-story subdivision homes. Town home developments are also underway, providing an attractive option for the many young families moving to the area. Live in a more centralized location and be assured of future commercial and business opportunities close at-hand, or settle a little further out for more privacy and open space. Both options are readily available.
Hugo was inaugurated with its first strip mall in 2006 (pretty much sealing the suburb deal). The typical commuter convenience fare is offered: supermarket, major-chain coffee shop, dry cleaning business and nail service. Order up a pie, sub or soft serve in Hugo, but if it's something more eclectic you desire, you'll have to head to neighboring White Bear Lake to the south. There you'll find Ursula's, a fine dining and wine establishment in Downtown White Bear Lake. With ten tables under white linen tablecloths and tea lights on top, it's a cozy, romantic atmosphere in which to enjoy an entree of pork tenderloin and a white flight. Or hit the fresh (in every meaning of the word), upscale deli, "Ingredients Cafe;" if you're there late at night on the weekends, you can even catch some live music.
The best shopping in the area is also to be found in White Bear Lake; in "old" Downtown White Bear (east of 61) you'll find a charming array of flower shops, unique gift and specialty shops, craft shops, quilting shop, a scrap-booking store, and a vintage wine store . "New" Downtown White Bear (west of 61) includes more franchise shops and restaurants: Caribou Coffee, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Quiznos Subs, Le Ann Chin, Papa John's. Hugo and Centerville promise to be dynamic communities in the coming years. If you're primed for some change and progress, these areas would be great locations to settle.
In June 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Hugo, MN was $236,295. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
