St. Louis Park is an established first-ring suburb of Minneapolis, an area that saw most of its growth take place after World War II and now focuses its efforts on improving and updating existing housing, business and retail development. After initially being inhabited by Native Americans, European settlers arrived in the 1850s, cleared brush and trees and established farms to supply livestock and produce to Minneapolis.
Throughout the years, the Minneapolis city boundary encroached on the little town, originally known as "Elmwood" (later changed to derive its name from the Railroad station and thus, increase name recognition and interest in visiting the city). Minneapolis would have continued to expansion westward but St. Louis Park incorporated in 1886. By the early 1900s, St. Louis Park residents commuted to jobs in Minneapolis via streetcars and enjoyed a home life outside of the big city.
Today, St. Louis Park focuses on redevelopment aimed at creating livable communities: areas that are more pedestrian-friendly and less reliant on cars by offering a mix of housing, shopping, entertainment and jobs in proximate relation to one another. St. Louis Park maintains 51 parks, including an off-leash dog park, and miles of bike and walking trails throughout the city, including a commuter bike trail that links up to Downtown Minneapolis, Uptown, Hopkins and Chaska.
With a good mix of commercial, retail, business and residential development in St. Louis Park, residential areas comprise the largest portion of the community. The City offers a full range of housing from starter to executive homes many in the post-War rambler or Cape Cod style, as well as an ever-growing selection of town homes and condos as the City strives to meet the needs of a younger, professional population and an older, retired population. There are over 2,700 businesses in St. Louis Park, including: Park Nicollet Clinic, Japs Olson, Travelers Express/Moneygram, Novartis Nutrition Group, Midwest Plastic Components, Onvoy, and Benilde-St. Margaret's School.
The community has a strong school system and a vision for the future that includes generating more space for young people to gather and improved roads and intersections. St. Louis Park continues to refine and improve itself, and would be a highly accommodating location for either a family or young professional looking to be close to Minneapolis and have local entertainment and recreation options as well.
In June 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Saint Louis Park, MN was $252,833. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
