In 1852, the little community of Hopkins was settled near a trail established by Native Americans that went from Lake Calhoun to Shakopee on the Minnesota River. Hopkins became a rest stop between Lake Minnetonka and St. Anthony for road-weary travelers and horses, as it was centrally located between the two destinations.

Originally a milling and farming town, Hopkins grew rapidly in the 1870s and '80s when three railroads came to the area and brought the potential for new business, particularly manufacturing. Another population boom came after World War II when the entire metro area sprawled towards the suburbs and streetcar service made it easier than ever to commute between Hopkins and Minneapolis; this convenience and prosperity continued until around 1951 when the interstate highways were developed. Hopkins became a city in 1947.

Hopkins is approximately 12 miles southwest of Minneapolis, a quick drive on Highway 169 and Interstate 394 and well-serviced by public transit. This is a great, family and teen-friendly community. There is a bevy of community organized recreation programs and outdoor facilities available including the Regional LRT Trail and the North Trail Corridor as well as 18 parks and recreational areas.

The Hopkins Center for the Arts is a point of pride for the community, a venue for performance arts appreciation or pursuit for people of all ages. There are lots of teen-friendly opportunities around town, including the Overpass Skate Park, student-owned coffeehouse, "The Depot," and discount movie theater. Hopkins High School athletic programs are recognized state-wide for their excellence as the school makes frequent appearances at state tournaments in multiple sports.

Hopkins can accommodate individuals and families with a wide range of needs and requirements, from new families to families with teens, unattached professionals or newlyweds, there is even a thriving senior community. Housing subdivisions are commonplace, consisting of town homes and ramblers with "town square" appeal, centered around a neighborhood park or recreational area. There are also older, more established areas that pay homage to Hopkins' rich history with post World War II ramblers, split and multi-level homes.

In October 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Hopkins, MN was $281,056. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
