In 1847, John Banfill became Fridley's first (and soon to be most popular) settler when he built the Banfill Tavern. At that time, the area was called Manomin. Fridley's namesake, Abram M. Fridley, moved to the area in 1851. The city experienced an industrial boom in 1957, only to be leveled in 1965 after three devastating tornadoes hit the area; destroying or damaging one of every four homes.
Today, Fridley is a bustling mix of residential neighborhoods and business districts located about 12 miles north of Minneapolis, on Interstate 94, making it a convenient bus or car ride. Among the 900 or so businesses that call Fridley home is Minnesota Medical behemoth, Medtronic.
The hub of the summer community calendar is Fridley's premier summer festival, the Fridley 49er Festival, so-named for the year the city's charter was drafted (1949), as well as the year the first active settlement came to be (1849). This festival features a parade, Miss Fridley pageant, street dances, craft show and carnival. Winter boasts "Winter Fest:" sleigh rides, ice games, dog sled rides, snowball launching contest and medallion hunt.
Springbrook Nature Center offers a variety of year round indoor and outdoor learning and recreation opportunities such as three miles of hiking trails through oak and aspen forests and an interpretive center featuring hands-on exhibits. Check out the riverfront at Islands of Peace Riverfront Park for a scenic stroll. The community also sponsors a slew of adult, children and senior educational, fitness and recreational opportunities through community education programs, parks programs and senior programs.Fridley is a family friendly community, offering an excellent private school alternative: Totino Grace High School frequently captures local sports headlines, and many student athletes have gone on to win college athletic scholarships from this institution.
Fridley encompasses a wide range of lifestyles, from the very upscale to more modest. Many of the neighborhoods are well-established and include ramblers, split and multi-levels from the post World War II building boom. There is some new housing development taking place, usually in the form of subdivisions, with increasingly more town homes and condos as both the younger professionals and active seniors seek affordable and manageable housing.
Fridley offers a range of traditional chain dining but you'll occasionally find the neighborhood coffeehouse or ethnic cuisine gem, such as Kings Fine Korean Cuisine where you can feast on a meal of Korean, Chinese or Japanese flavor.
In October 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Fridley, MN was $181,144. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
