The first permanent settlers arrived to the area now known as West St. Paul in 1848. The City was platted by 1855. In 1858 the land directly across the river from present-day downtown St. Paul was incorporated as the original City of West St. Paul. That town, legally unrelated to present-day West St. Paul, eventually ceased operations when they encountered financial trouble. In 1887, the City of South St. Paul was formed; comprised of a combination of present-day South and West St. Paul. Disputes regarding representation resulted in a split in 1889 when present-day West St. Paul was incorporated.
Today, West St. Paul is a first-ring suburb adjacent to St. Paul that describes itself as a "full-service" city; it's approximately 95 percent developed. With over 600 businesses, including a light industrial park located in the southeastern corner, residential neighborhoods and many housing and commercial developments in implementation or planning stages, West St. Paul will certainly experience continued growth in the future. West St. Paul houses Thomas Irvine Dodge Nature Center--an educational and recreational preserve that includes 320 acres of prairies, hardwood forests, lakes, wetlands, miles of hiking trails, a working farm, orchard, and bee apiary.
There are 15 parks within the city, an indoor ice arena, activity swimming pool and golf course. Take the family to West St. Paul Days where they can enjoy a street dance, 5K, sports tournaments, kiddie parade, rib dinner and queen coronation. Signal Hills Shopping Center (an outdoor mall) is your best local shopping option, otherwise, a few miles up South Robert Street takes you into downtown St. Paul for a wider selection of retail. Check out Casper's Cherokee Sirloin Room in West St. Paul--unpretentious but still stands up to the best steakhouses in the area with its quality aged beef, from registered Angus Porterhouse to choice prime rib, or seafood options.
West St. Paul hosts primarily single-family homes. The city sponsors a "Quality Housing" incentive program to help residents maintain and increase the value of their homes, keep the community looking good and improve the quality of life for residents. The area generally contains ramblers and split and multi-levels in mature neighborhoods. This is a nice, family-friendly area that will continue to develop and redevelop to the benefit of area families.
In June 2007, the average home selling price in West St. Paul was $207,054. These figures include both single family homes and condos. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
