The city of St. Paul Park is located approximately 10 miles south of downtown St. Paul, past Pig's Eye Lake and Pig's Eye Lake Park, along the Mississippi River.
St. Paul Park was founded as an incorporated village in Newport Township in 1887. In 1888, St. Paul Park was on par with Minneapolis, both with booming economies and thriving industrial areas. One year into its existence, St. Paul Park boasted graded sidewalks, over 200 beautiful residences, a hotel and numerous stores, 12 busy "manufactories" including woolen goods, carriage and sleigh manufacturers, mattresses, farm machinery, carts, steam engines, brooms and dusters and a lumber yard.
St. Paul Park was centrally-located for such industry of the day, being situated between the The Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul and The Chicago, Burlington & Northern lines. A worker or resident could hop a 25-minute train ride into downtown St. Paul for a mere six cents! The Village of St. Paul Park incorporated in 1909 and continued to be a busy industrial site, adding more factories and offering businesses free land incentives and employees cash bonuses. As a result, many boarding houses sprang up and the population was largely young factory employees and young families.
Today, the city of St. Paul Park remains a largely industrial area and continues to plan for new and varied development. The city recently annexed approximately 600 acres of land for development to potentially allow for additional senior housing as the need arises, expand the commercial area and create new parks and open spaces, increasing convenience and natural appeal for residents.
Some of the community events featured here pay homage to the city's industrial past and close ties to the railroad system; the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train comes through each year and provides entertainment, there's Heritage Days' Festival that includes a parade, adult and teen mud volleyball tournament, street dance, 10K race, horseshoe tournament, golf tournament, car show, pet contest, tractor pull, Miss Heritage Days Pageant and fireworks display.
Seniors in the area are served by the South Washington County Senior Center (Cottage Grove). Activities and services include tours, dances, potlucks and parties, water aerobics, dominoes, legal and tax assistance, a book discussion group, health screening, card playing, painting and quilting groups, classes, Weight Watchers group, home-delivered meals and congregate dining five days a week.
There are several new community housing and mixed-use developments on the horizon for the community. St. Paul Park features single and multiple-family residences, condos and town homes. Homes are generally modest, many properties possess a lot of potential for expansion and modernization and there are plenty of "starter" homes here, ramblers and cute two-stories.
In June 2007, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in St. Paul Park, MN was $187,597. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
