South St. Paul (SSP) is situated on what was once the Sioux village of Kaposia. Historically, SSP did the "dirty work" for neighboring communities, primarily slaughter and meat packing for local hog and cattle farms. South St. Paul was once home to the world's largest stockyard. Located just 5 miles south of Minneapolis, SSP prides itself on a rich history of ethnic diversity, beginning with primarily German and Irish settlers, and a strong work ethic. It remains a place with an active citizen population and a strong sense of community.

South St. Paul residents take advantage of a beautiful backdrop of natural amenities and is steadfast in its effort to promote and preserve its natural areas including wetlands, prairies and forests. South St. Paul contains 17 parks, totaling 246 acres and including playgrounds, picnic areas, natural areas, sports fields, water access points, regional trail access and local trails for biking, walking and running. Walk the river trails and bike through the parks, view eagles and herons from the river bluffs, or fish and boat from the river pier.

The recently added Central Square Community Center (2002) contains a state-of-the-art fitness room, indoor pool, activity rooms, gymnastics center, meeting rooms and senior center. The Community Center is a central location for both senior and youth activities throughout the year. South St. Paul owns and operates Fleming Field Airport as well as its own library.

The community is active in promoting their local high school athletics and many community activities center around high school sports, especially hockey. In fact, the community built an ice arena, Wakota Arena, for the express purpose of promoting hockey programs for the southeast metro area.

South St. Paul is comprised of mostly residential, service-oriented business and some light industrial. There's not much retail or commercial development to speak of, save for a few mega-super-stores, some chain dining has made its way into the area and there are a few throwback local "dives." A person would have better luck heading to downtown St. Paul for their fine dining and entertainment needs.

South St. Paul is well-served by public transit to both downtowns Minneapolis and St. Paul and it's an easy commute for those who must drive. The area contains primarily modest single family housing, cozy ramblers, split and multi-levels in mature neighborhoods.
