Located just across the river from St. Paul Park, Inver Grove Heights is a still-developing, mixed-use community 9 miles south of downtown St. Paul. In 1852, pioneers, attracted to the area's rolling green hills and situation near the Mississippi River, staked claims. The Irish settlers clustered their farms along what is now Rich Valley Boulevard. The Germans claimed the wooded farmland in the northwest portion of the community. Other settlers from France and England built homes along the Mississippi River. From 1858 to 1880, hundreds of settlers were attracted to the township, named after an Irish fishing village, "Inver" and the homeland of the German settlers, "Grove." By 1880, 240 farms, four churches and four school districts had been established. Inver Grove Heights became a city in 1965.
Today, Inver Grove Heights encompasses a mix of residential dwellings and commercial facilities with lots of potential for growth; only two-thirds of the available land in the City has been developed. The city offers many amenities and events to its residents. Every September the community celebrates with Inver Grove Heights Days. Highlights include a treasure hunt, sporting activities and tournaments, street dance, parade and fireworks display. Inver Grove Heights is in proximity to the Mississippi River Valley, proving a beautiful backdrop for year-round recreational activities. Lakes, ponds and wetlands cover many areas of the city.
Inver Grove Heights has experienced significant commercial development in recent years, including the addition of several restaurants, a hotel, and a 16-screen movie theater. The Cahill Corridor, Inver Grove Heights' Main Street, celebrates the winter holiday season with decorative lighting and festivities. "Holiday on Main Street" is an annual event that includes brunch with Santa, Reindeer Sleigh Rides, Hay Rides, Arts and Crafts Show, and the Christmas Tree Lighting and Dedication.
Residents take advantage of the extensive Community Center: indoor water park, fitness center, running/walking track, lap pool and diving well, ice arenas, a gymnasium, and a variety of classes and programs for all ages, as well as 17 parks that boast fishing, playground equipment, ball fields, hockey rinks and fitness trails. For the more refined, there's Inverwood Golf Course: 27 holes on 275 acres of rolling, wooded terrain, featuring both a championship and executive course.
Residents have a wide choice of housing, ranging from multi-million dollar estates-McMansions--to more modest homes, ramblers, multi and split-levels, prairie styles and condos and town homes. Or, purchase a piece of vacant land and build your own--there's plenty of space for it!
There are currently several single-family residential developments underway with more planned for the future. Your best bet for entertainment is still going to be downtown Minneapolis, St. Paul or maybe Bloomington with the Mall of America. This is a nice, developing community in which to settle a family, but might be a little too far off the social scene for a young professional to feel "dialed in."
