Hastings, the count seat of Dakota County, is located at the confluence of the St. Croix, Vermillion, and Mississippi Rivers, approximately 20 miles south of St. Paul. The area around Hastings is rich in history with many of the original Victorian-style buildings existing today and refurbished for residential and commercial use.
The area was first settled by a military detachment from Fort Snelling, sent to guard a blocked shipment of supplies in the winter of 1820. The Treaty of Mendota of 1851 opened the area for white settlement and Hastings was named as the county seat shortly thereafter. The name "Hastings" was drawn out of a hat; it's the middle name of Henry Sibley--a notable figure in Minnesota history.
Today, Victorian residences in tree-lined neighborhoods and a classic Main Street downtown maintain Hastings' distinctive small town character while the city grows steadily with residential, commercial and industrial development. Hastings provides a wide range of recreational and entertainment options to residents and visitors alike, including a mix of shopping facilities especially in Historic Downtown, restaurants, and community festivities; Hastings is close to several marinas on many waterways, 9 golf courses, Afton Alps and Welch Village Ski Areas, Afton State Park and Vermillion Falls among other natural areas, and Treasure Island Resort & Casino.
Besides being reasonably proximate to St. Paul, there are many employment opportunities within the city, among the many smaller businesses and services, major employers include Dakota County offices, Smead Manufacturing, School District 200, Regina Medical Center and Intek Plastics.
Many of the homes are in the Victorian style, restored and preserved. Hastings is seeing its share of new development, ramblers and colonials and prairie styles, predominantly single-family residences. There is also a selection of condos and town houses. Hastings is a good community in which to relocate a family or choose from a selection of more modest houses to start a family.
In June 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Hastings, MN was $200,879. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
