Located 17 miles southwest of downtown Minneapolis, Eden Prairie is a bustling suburb that was slow to start. When the land was opened to settlers in 1851, it became a predominantly farming community and remained a quiet, "pastoral" town for the next 80 years or so. The arrival of Flying Cloud Airport was the first sign of big development in 1946. The 1960s and 1970s saw major growth for the City's parks and recreation system. Construction of Interstate 494 and the Eden Prairie Shopping Center meant convenience for residents and brought more people to the area in the 1970s. Today, Eden Prairie is home to more than 2,200 businesses and nearly 19,000 households; this is a thriving, business-rich community that is a highly desirable place to live and work.
Conveniently located along Interstate 494 and Highways 169, 62, 5 and 212, Eden Prairie is an ever-evolving, sprawling community. It's likely you can find a job close to home here; Eden Prairie is one of the most conducive communities to business as exemplified by the Golden Triangle business park. It's a complex comprised of over 9 million square feet of office, warehouse and commercial property, the largest such complex in the southwest metro.
Besides taking care of business, Eden Prairie cares about its residents and is constantly implementing community improvement initiatives. Eden Prairie is home to Anderson Lakes Park Reserve-a chain of lakes, wetlands and trails that stretches into Bloomington and extends towards Bush Lake, as well as 17 lakes, more than 4,500 acres of open space and wetlands, beaches, fishing piers, skating rinks, community gardens, tennis courts, baseball fields, disc golf, archery range, off-leash dog parks and nearly 200 miles of hiking, walking and biking trails and sidewalks.
Eden Prairie's high school football team is consistently slugging it out for state titles; it's almost as certain as the sunrise. If the kids are into sports, get them involved early and they will enjoy a nice high school career with serious collegiate prospects. Due to its downtown Minneapolis proximity (subsequent public transit) and plethora of town homes, condos and luxury apartments, Eden Prairie is a fine prospect for the young professional. The re-locating family will find plenty of quaint but spacious and luxurious housing subdivisions as well as some older neighborhoods boasting ramblers and multi-levels.
In June 2007, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Eden Prairie, MN was $412,289. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
