The City of Mendota Heights is located just across the River from Minneapolis, 13 miles south of Downtown Minneapolis. Mendota Heights was designated a city in 1974. While Mendota Heights is young in years, its proximity to the Mississippi River ensures that it maintains a much longer history beginning as a fur trading post in the early 1700s.
Today, Mendota Heights is a largely residential, planned community with a rural, country atmosphere and the amenities of a larger city. Though centrally-located in the metropolitan area, the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers form a natural green belt, insulating Mendota Heights and allowing residents to maintain a quiet, private way of life, unique in the Twin Cities. The city offers an array of programming for people of all ages and interests, including sports, classes, trips and camps.
Mendota Heights houses a thriving business community, with the City reserving a full 25 percent of land for developing business initiatives. The community maintains 11 parks and large open spaces and encourages generous residential development, with future plans in place for diversified, high technology offices and business areas.
The city is particularly proud of their excellent schools and recognizes their contribution to the progressive character of the City. Civic pride and aesthetic excellence are high priorities in Mendota Heights. The influence of river bluffs, rolling topography and wooded areas provides a particularly attractive backdrop for residential development. The topography led to the creation of a curvilinear local street system and allowed for intimate residential neighborhoods to be developed among mature, wooded settings, lakes, wetlands, nature preserves as well as the Mississippi and Minnesota River bluffs.
Major employment centers such as downtown Minneapolis, St. Paul, MSP International Airport and the Mall of America are only minutes away or a quick commute via bus ride. Community events include annual celebrations in the parks, fourth of July fireworks, a Halloween bonfire, community-wide garage sale, firefighters' dance, a fishing derby and tree lighting ceremony during the holidays.
Mendota Heights would be a good option for almost anyone looking to settle near the Twin Cities but maintain a little separation with the big city. Families will find the community very accommodating to their needs, and young professionals will find newer town homes or older properties perfect for starter homes very near the night life of both Minneapolis and St. Paul.
In October 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Mendota Heights, MN was $374,269. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
