University Community is comprised of several unique neighborhoods, a diverse ethnic heritage and wide range of residents including families and students. Nicollet Island is a residential area in the Mississippi River featuring primarily historical Victorian homes; all but two houses on the island date from 1864 to 1898. De La Salle High School is located on the island and the community maintains a countryside feel even though the skyscrapers loom overhead.
Dinkytown is in the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood and is mainly comprised of the University of Minnesota's student population, student housing-apartments and homes converted to multiplexes, and the businesses, retail and dining, that cater to their needs.
Como neighborhood, a little further off the River, consists of modest early 20th-century bungalows and Victorian and 1920s-era homes with a scattering of newer duplexes and single-family homes. Many of the larger homes here have also been converted to student housing.
Cedar-Riverside contributes the most to the ethnic diversity of the area. Historically, the neighborhood was known as "Snoose Boulevard," with a thriving community of Scandinavian immigrants, many of whom worked in the milling and lumber warehouses on the Mississippi River. In the 1960s and 1970s, Snoose Boulevard transitioned from a quaint neighborhood to a community of hippies, intellectuals, actors, artists and musicians. Presently, the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood boasts the largest community of immigrants in the Twin Cities. Cedar-Riverside, also known as the "West Bank," is a vibrant area with restaurants, pubs and cafes. In addition, numerous smaller venues feature live performance, music and dance.
These neighborhoods offer a wide range of housing options and diverse populations. A young professional might scoop up a great equity-building home in the Como neighborhood or take a property in more diverse and dynamic Cedar-Riverside, while a family might prefer to settle on throwback Nicollet Island.
In June 2007, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in University, MN was $247,762. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
