Watertown is located just 31 miles west of the Twin Cities, near the Crow River. Initially the site of an Indian village, the village of Watertown was surveyed and platted in 1856. The City was probably named after Watertown, New York. No crops could be raised in the area until the heavy timber was cut. No provisions could be obtained except by boats up the Mississippi River during the summer, and consequently, prices on all necessaries were extremely high with many of the settlers unable to afford even the basics.
Wild game, fish and berries comprised the main diet of the settlers and in the spring they made maple sugar in large quantities. The settlers lived relatively peacefully alongside the Native Americans. Mail service arrived in the spring of 1857. A stage coach came from Fort Snelling, St. Paul and St. Anthony to Watertown.
Today, the City of Watertown has seen much growth beyond those meager beginnings, and the City strives to attain a high quality of life for its residents. There are 11 parks comprising over 42 acres of open space and offering walking trails, ball fields, picnic areas, skating rinks and fishing areas on the Crow River. Nearby recreational lakes include Lake Waconia and Lake Minnetonka.
The scenic Luce Line Trail is located on the former railroad bed which belonged to the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad. The trail begins in Plymouth and stretches to Hutchinson, running right through Watertown. It offers opportunities for jogging, hiking, biking, horseback riding, snowmobiling and cross country skiing throughout a scenic countryside of lakes, marshes, farm fields, pastures and small towns.
During the summer, the community celebrates with the Rails to Trails Festival, featuring events for people of all ages, including Taste of Watertown, local bands, fire muster parade and 5K. During the school year, the community rallies around its local high school sports teams, and music and performance events. Shopping in the area is largely comprised of local vendors, with the metro area than an hour away filling in the gaps.
In June 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Watertown, MN was $283,750. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
