Chanhassen was one of the earliest settlements in Carver County but grew at one of the slowest rates until the late 1960s. Until that time, farming was the leading industry, but when the Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad arrived, so too did more settlers and a changing way of life. Pauly's General Store became the main store in the village, and a saloon, feed store, lumber yard and the State Bank of Chanhassen were also established. During the 1960s, Chanhassen's first mini-mall was built to house a drug store, grocery, hardware, and restaurant.
That same decade a builder named Herb Bloomberg moved his business to Chanhassen and opened a lumber and hardware store. He had become interested in the theater business after building the Old Log Theatre in Excelsior, and eventually opened his own 600-seat theater in Chanhassen in October 1968. In the late 1970s, Chanhassen enacted a redevelopment plan for its downtown and industrial parks. Today, businesses include a variety of commercial and industrial companies. Downtown Chanhassen offers shopping, eating, and entertainment.
Currently, over 500 businesses are housed in Chanhassen, employing over 8,500 people. Chanhassen's main industries include: printing, financial services, medical products, engineering, food production, and high-tech manufacturing. The city of Chanhassen has a well-balanced mix of industrial, commercial retail and service, business and residential, making it a great place to live, work and play. The city is located only about 20 miles west of Minneapolis, making it a convenient drive or bus ride into the office. Five major highways traverse the community, making it easy to reach other metropolitan areas, including Highway 212, which, after redevelopment takes place in 2008, could impact Chanhassen's population significantly.
Some of the many amenities available to residents include 12 beautiful lakes, Bluff Creek Golf Course, and Halla Green Executive Golf Course and Driving Range, a 500-acre park system featuring five community parks and 22 neighborhood parks scattered throughout the community, 55 miles of trails and sidewalks for walkers, bikers, runners, and in-line skaters. The trails connect downtown, parks, and neighborhoods. There's also a Senior Center and Chanhassen Recreation Center.
The city hosts several community events each year: the February Festival, Easter Egg/Candy Hunt, Arbor Day Celebration, July 4th Celebration, Fire Department Open House, Halloween Party, and Tree Lighting Ceremony. Chanhassen is a great, family-friendly area where you're likely to find a mix of housing opportunities, with the most recently developed areas boasting primarily planned housing subdivisions.
