Savage came into existence first as "Hamilton Landing," a trading post at the junction of Credit River and the Minnesota River. Later, a man named M.W. Savage purchased a horse, Dan Patch, and subsequently renamed the city and smacked it right on the map when Dan Patch broke the long-standing world pacing mile record.
Dan Patch is a pervasive figure in the city, adorning names of businesses and buildings, and featured prominently in black and white photographs hanging in the local Culver's Restaurant, for example. Dan Patch is also the name of one of the main drags on the Minnesota State Fair grounds in St. Paul. This all fits in very nicely with the culture of the area as Canterbury Park (horse race track) is located in neighboring Shakopee and these areas have all been considered, at one time or another, Minnesota's "horse country."
Savage works closely with neighboring cities to provide its residents with a high quality of life, such as joining with Savage in a joint school district. Savage is a sprawling, growing community located about 25 minutes south of the Twin Cities. Comprised of a lot of open space, characteristics common to this area are fast-moving county roads, strip malls, discount retail such as Target, Wal-Mart and Sam's Club, and new housing developments. Savage hasn't quite yet found her outer boundaries, so she continues to grow out rather than up and seems to be the quintessential definition of "urban sprawl."
Homes are typically of the newer and larger style with multiple bedrooms and baths, fireplaces, decks in the yards, and multiple-car garages with plenty of open space. This is a great city to live in if you like you like your food fast and not necessarily eclectic, your shopping of the "blue light" variety, and your idea of "entertainment" is staring at an array of flat screen TVs over a plate of seasoned French fries and extra spicy buffalo wings! Jump off the beaten path and visit Murphy Hanrehan Park Reserve, one of the premiere spots in the Three Rivers Park District, featuring horse, bike and hiking trails, snowmobile and cross country ski trails, and boat access to Murphy Lake.
You can enjoy some nice dining and entertainment offerings such as Axel's Bonfire, featuring dueling pianos on weekend nights, The Windmill Cafe, a breakfast dive specializing in gigantic cinnamon rolls and eggs benedict that will melt in your mouth, not to mention some light entertainment as the regulars and staff banter, and Major's Sports Cafe where you have to remember to bring a box of tissues as you'll often find yourself consoling a disappointed Vikings fan around the middle of the season.
In June 2007, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Savage, MN was $303,264. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
