Like many areas of Minnesota, Burnsville was originally inhabited by Native Americans, the Mdewakanton Sioux, and was eventually signed away to Governor Ramsey in 1851. The first settlers to the area were primarily Irish farmers who were lured by the rich and vast swaths of land and the nearby Minnesota River. Burnsville was first named "Byrnseville Township" after William Byrne, who helped build a church, school and cemetery. Burnsville became a town in 1965.
Burnsville is a unique mix of old and new. Certain neighborhoods feature well-maintained rambler, split-level, or A-frame style homes on grid-like avenues and boulevards with large, fenced backyards and sweeping shade trees while new housing developments featuring large homes on cul-de-sacs are springing up in pockets around the city. This truly is a thriving and vibrant community with solid plans for continued development through the year 2030, especially to the area known as "The Heart of the City," located on Nicollet Avenue between Burnsville Parkway and Highway 13.
In the past two years numerous multi-level town homes and condos have been erected in an eclectic Downtown or Uptown style, all with beautiful views of the distant Minneapolis skyline, promising a thriving central community in the coming years with new business, retail and arts and entertainment offerings.
The area is paved with attractive cobblestone sidewalks, teardrop light fixtures and hanging flower baskets in the spring and summer, adorned in white lights in the winter. An ideal place to raise a family or rent your first apartment or town home, Burnsville is approximately 20 minutes from Downtown Minneapolis, and 10 minutes from both the Mall of America and the Minneapolis International Airport and features a busy transit station for bus service to and from Downtown Minneapolis.
In June 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Burnsville, MN was $237,884. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
