The country town of Zimmerman is located about 30 miles Northwest of Downtown Minneapolis, on Highway 169. This community was originally settled around Lake Fremont, and was only later named "Zimmerman" after a local farmer who sold away his land in order to allow the Great Northern Railroad to make its way through the area. Zimmerman is considered the "gateway" to the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge, 30,700 acres of wetlands and woods set aside for hunting, hiking, cross-country skiing, fishing and canoeing, camping, and environmental education.
If you're a sportsman (or woman) you'll want to seriously consider relocating to this area as the access to the surrounding natural landscape is unsurpassed while Minneapolis and all its conveniences is only a half-hour commute away. Zimmerman is generally characterized by wide-open spaces, stands of tall pine and deciduous trees, particularly around the lake, and a country-scape dotted with farms and pastureland as well as newly built subdivisions; there's something for every taste, including the modern day pioneer-with vast amounts of vacant land, it's the perfect place to build your dream home and then sit back and watch the city come to you. Future development includes plans for a new high school and business park. This area is experiencing a great deal of growth, and future plans for development of Highway 169 will help that process continue for many years to come.
Properties around the lakes are particularly attractive, many with cabin or chalet-style appeal and a mix of seasonal summer cabins as well as permanent, four-season residents occupying those homes. One is probably best served to drive either north to Princeton, or south to Elk River for major retail and commercial dining options as well as a selection of family-friendly indoor entertainment such as movie theaters, bowling alleys, and indoor skating. If you want to fit in with the locals and you're legal, take in some live music and play an innocent hand of Texas hold 'em at "The Pondy," your neighborhood bar and grill. And don't forget to bring the whole family out to Wild West Days for the chili cook off and chuck-wagon races in the summer!
In June 2007, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Zimmerman, MN was $198,409. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
