Incorporated in 1969 and previously known as "Lebanon Township," the story of how Apple Valley got her current name is told two different ways, both by developers who helped build up the area in the sixties. One story goes that when driving into Lebanon Township on County Road 42, the view reminded Henry Broback of Apple Valley, California. The other story goes that Orin Thompson, a developer who worked in the southwest corner of the city, promised all his residents an apple tree in their backyards. Many yards in that area of town still have their trees, thus earning the city the name Apple Valley.
Apple Valley is similar to her neighbor, Eagan, in many respects. Residents here also enjoy a high quality of life and both communities are growing at rapid rates-in fact, in 1998 Apple Valley added a second full-sized high school, Eastview, to accommodate the student population swell. A somewhat older city, Apply Valley is a "planned upscale community" that includes older housing developments styled in the sixties and seventies look, as well as brand new, spacious homes and yards that include all the fine touches.
Main thoroughfares through this city are Cedar Avenue (Hwy. 77) and 35E, connecting Apple Valley to the Mall of America (10 minutes), the Minneaoplis/St. Paul International Airport (15 minutes), and both Minneapolis and St. Paul Downtown areas (about 20 minutes). Downtown access is made easy with Minnesota Valley Transit Authority running multiple stations out of Apple Valley, with the expansion of stations, services, and buses continuing into the coming years. In fact, all public transportation in the metro area including light rail, and the bus lines serving all metro suburbs has seen a sharp increase in ridership as people sprawl to the suburbs but still crawl to the city for work each day and gas prices remain high.
Besides being proximate to the lively downtown areas and Mall of America, Apple Valley offers a number of recreational opportunities including multiple golf courses; the Apple Valley Family Aquatic Center with diving board, water slides, sand/water play area, sand volleyball courts, and water features; the Minnesota Zoo and IMAX Theater, and Lebanon Hills Wilderness--2,000 acres of hillside, lakes and wetlands including tent and RV camping, hiking and ski trails and lake access points for canoeing.
In June 2007, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Apple Valley, MN was $242,326. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
