Champlin is located about 20 miles northwest of Minneapolis, a quick drive up highway 169 and Interstate 94. This area was a good place to settle because the junction of Elm Creek and the Mississippi River made it an attractive location for a trading post. Charles Miles made the first permanent settlement here, building his house just below the mouth of Elm Creek in 1852.
Champlin is a developing community; you can drive along the highway and see vast expanses of fields dotted with the beginnings of a new business park, housing subdivision or the seemingly out-of-place strip mall in the middle of nowhere. As with many other cities located either on the 169 or 94 corridors, this area is experiencing a great deal of growth, acquiring new retail, business and residential commodities at a very fast rate. Public transportation to Downtown Minneapolis (buses) is readily available and will be continuing to improve and expand in the coming months.
Some of the natural amenities include Elm Creek Park Reserve (at 4,900 acres it's the largest reserve in the Three Rivers Park District) and the Mississippi River. The Reserve offers the Eastman Nature Center, biking and hiking trails, access to the North Hennepin Trail Corridor, mountain biking trails, horse trails, swimming pond, off-leash dog areas, campsites, archery, tubing and downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and snowmobile trails.
Shopping is conveniently located at any of a number of strip malls sitting at just about any main intersection, and if you think there should be a strip mall at a particular corner, chances are good one might spring up in the next couple of months! For excellent breakfast fare, let the pancakes at Hudy's Cafe melt in your mouth. If it's that romantic evening with that special someone you're after, Buona Sera Restaurant and Wine Bar is a great Italian spot with beautiful atmosphere and a lovely deck to soak in the evening air.
There are lots of subdivisions in this area boasting a wide range of homes and town homes to fit most tastes and budgets. Multi-levels, walkout ramblers and split-levels are common sights. This community is probably most conducive to families as it's easy to take little Tommy to karate practice and sit next door at the coffee shop and catch up on emails, or do a quick grocery store run across the street. But young, unattached adults might want to take a look too, as it's close to main thoroughfares and near Downtown Minneapolis, in the heart of a developing area but suburban enough that a person could stumble across a really great deal in a brand-new town home or condo.
In June 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Champlin, MN was $237,226. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
