In 1873 Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote “No dreamland on earth can be more unearthly in its beauty and glory than the St. Johns in April.” Enterprise, Florida is perfectly placed on the northern shore of Lake Monroe, one of the lakes that make up the St. Johns River system. Enterprise’s closest neighbors are the cities of DeBary and Deltona. Enterprise is just minutes to Interstate 4 and State Road 415 and about 45 minutes to Interstate 95. Enterprise is sited about 40 minutes to the excitement of Orlando and 35 minutes to the sandy shores of Daytona Beach. Now a quiet community, Enterprise was once a booming tourist town.
Shortly after the Civil War the steamboat era brought society’s wealthiest to the town of Enterprise, which was known as a hunting and fishing paradise and had mineral springs and exhilarating expeditions to shoot alligators. Many beautiful hotels and businesses began turning up in Enterprise, the most famous was The Brock House Hotel. The Brock House Hotel had many famous people grace its doors including Grover Cleveland, Ulysses S. Grant, Jay Gould, the Vanderbilts, James Rockefeller, and General William Sherman. By the late 1800s, the railroad replaced the steamboat as the preferred way to travel and Enterprise’s corner on the tourist market quickly faded.
Part of Volusia County, the Enterprise of today is a tranquil community with friendly people and scenic locales. While convenient to the excitement of theme parks, beaches, shopping, and dining, Enterprise offers its residents hometown classics like the Annual Old Enterprise Festival; a time when neighbors can come together to enjoy the favorable Central Florida weather and experience local entertainment and crafts.
Part of the Volusia County Public School System, Enterprise is home to Enterprise Elementary School for grades kindergarten through fifth grade with middle school and high school students attending neighboring nearby schools.
Volusia County is home to very prestigious colleges and universities including Bethune-Cookman University, Daytona Beach Community College, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Stetson University, and University of Central Florida the Daytona Beach Campus.
