Incorporated in 1995, Deltona is a planned community that was created in 1962 by the Mackle brothers who bought 17,203 acres and began development. Deltona was originally marketed to senior citizens looking for a warm place to retire and in the 1970 census the average age of a resident in Deltona was 62. However, with the building of nearby Disney World and other amusement parks, the marketing strategy changed and a housing boom occurred in the 1980s and 1990s and the average age of a resident in Deltona was 35.

Today, Deltona is still a growing community that offers many wonderful amenities close to home including golf, shopping, dining, and lodging. Over 100 lakes are in Deltona and comprise eight square miles of water! Needless to say, Deltona residents of all ages have many opportunities for fishing, boating, canoeing, and other water sports.

Perfectly placed in southwestern Volusia County, Deltona is midway between Daytona Beach, 30 miles to the northeast, and Orlando, 30 miles to the southwest. Access to both of these large Florida cities is via Interstate 4, which passes through Deltona. Additional neighboring communities of Deltona include Enterprise, DeBary, Orange City, DeLand, Lake Helen, and Sanford.

This excellent location places residents of Deltona within minutes of the amazing theme parks of Disney World and Sea World and minutes within the wonderful waves of the Atlantic Ocean at Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach.

Deltona has many beautiful parks that encompass over 112 acres. Deltona Parks and Recreation Department offers summer youth programs; youth sports such as soccer, flag football, cheerleading, softball, basketball, roller hockey, and tennis; adult sports including softball, basketball, flag football, and tennis; senior citizen programs; after-school programs; and holiday events including Fourth of July fireworks.

Known as a "bedroom community" because of its central location between Daytona Beach and Orlando, Deltona provides a large residential base for commuters to both cities. With a current population of 85,484, Deltona is the largest municipality within Volusia County.

Ideal for commuters is Volusia County's Public Transit System called Votran. The Votran bus offers special fares for senior citizens and for commuters who may be looking for an alternative to driving busy Interstate 4.

Deltona offers many different types of homes including Florida-style homes in subdivisions and luxurious estates that offer acreage. The average price of a home in Deltona is around $200,000, but depending on what you are looking for, prices can reach all the way to the $1,000,000 range.
