Located on the northern shore of the soothing St. Johns River, near Lake Monroe, is the delightful Florida town of DeBary; named for its founder, Samuel Frederick deBary, a wealthy wine merchant, who in 1871 bought 400 acres to build a hunting lodge called "DeBary Hall." The 8,000-square-foot, 20-room Italianate mansion played host to such guests as Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Grover Cleveland. DeBary Hall is now an historic site that is open to the public for touring.
Ideally located in southwestern Volusia County, DeBary has direct access to Interstate 4 and U. S. Highway 17-92 and is sited between Orlando and Daytona Beach. DeBary was incorporated in 1993 and the approximate population is 18,620 in an area of about 25 square miles. While the beaches of Daytona and the thrill of the Orlando amusement parks are nearby, DeBary is a growing town that gives residents many dining and shopping selections.
DeBary is well-known in the golf world thanks to the challenging 18 holes of the DeBary Golf and Country Club who has played host on several occasions to the U. S. Open Qualifying.
DeBary offers something for everyone including upscale country clubs and championship golf courses, rural acreage with horses, and homes on the water. The average price of homes in DeBary ranges from $200,000 to $300,000. DeBary also has the lowest ad valorem tax rate in Volusia County at just 3%. Part of the Volusia County Public School System, DeBary now has a new elementary school that opened in 1996 with middle and high school students attending school in an adjacent town.
You will find many gorgeous shade trees among DeBary's 12 lovely parks that offer many opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. One of the parks is Gemini Springs Park, named for its free-flowing twin springs that offer fantastic fun in the Florida sun with canoeing, horseback riding, and picnic areas.
The newest park in DeBary is Memorial Park, a 2.5-acre site that includes picnic pavilions, an F-15 fighter jet, and a nine-ton anchor from the USS Langley. DeBary Parks and Recreation Department has a Youth Soccer League, a summer recreation program for ages 6 to 11, and a senior citizen social every Monday.
