Most people think of the Everglades as being exclusive to South Florida, but the headwaters of the "glades" starts in the 23,000-acres of Lake Tohopekaliga (or Toho, as the locals call it) in a place called Boggy Creek. Boggy Creek is part of Kissimmee, Florida and is approximately 10 minutes from Orlando International Airport and 30 minutes from Disney World, Universal Studios, and International Drive.
Boggy Creek is in Osceola County and is famous for a different kind of night life. Boggy Creek Air Boat Tours gives tourists and residents a view of the "real Florida" including alligators, moccasins, osprey, wood storks, turtles, blue herons, egrets, and more. If you're looking for giant bass, look to Lake Tohopekaliga as this lake produces more bass weighing over 10 pounds than any other lake in the world.
Just because the tour is over, doesn't mean you have to leave; Boggy Creek has RV and tent camping at Southport Park. Southport Park is a 25-acre wooded lakeside park that offers an opportunity to view nature in its element and not a theme park. Some of the famous residents of Southport Park include alligators, eagles, wild turkeys, deer, birds, and more.
These Florida wetlands received presidential attention in 1872 when President Chester A. Arthur had a ribbon cutting ceremony at Southport before his voyage on one of the very first steamers on the Kissimmee River.
While Boggy Creek is home to Central Florida's wildlife, they actually have a Kissimmee address. The average price of homes in this zip code is $200,000 to $330,000, but this depends on what type of home/property you are looking for as the price could go much higher. Boggy Creek has several different types of homes including newer Florida-style homes and older concrete-block homes.
While children will enjoy nature's classroom, they will also benefit from Boggy Creek being a part of the much sought-after Osceola School System which has 21 elementary schools, eight middle schools, and 16 high schools.
