Apopka, meaning "potato eating place" was given its name by its Native American inhabitants. The Masons became an integral part of Apopka during this time and built Orange Lodge #36 in 1859; it still stands in its original location at Alabama Avenue and Highway 441 and is the oldest lodge in continuous use in the State of Florida.
The citrus groves of Apopka are starting to share space with new businesses blooming throughout town including Lowe's, Home Depot, Staples and Chili's. New roads are also being built including the new Apopka Bypass that will reduce some of Highway 441's traffic by passing south of the city to rejoin Highway 441 at its junction with Maitland Boulevard.
Apopka is close to major shopping and the major tourist spots of Orlando and yet maintains its small-town feel by offering a local Apopka Fair, outdoor G-rated movies in the park, Apopka Art and Foliage Festival, and more. Apopka also has city youth programs for children including soccer, flag football and cheerleading, dance, karate, tennis, and after school programs. Apopka is also famous for Lake Apopka where outdoor lovers can enjoy fishing and many outdoor activities.
