Tamarac is located in the western portion of central Broward County. This central location makes it a key city for business, leisure and recreation. Once a fledgling senior retirement community in the early 1960's, a young millionaire named Ken Behring came from the Midwest and bought up all the land and then started to build. He originally made his fortune with a chain of carwashes called Car-A-Mat. He called his new city Tamarac, Car-A-Mat spelled backwards, and the name remains.
Residents enjoy a full service Parks and Recreation Department that provide a variety of programs, classes, events and services for residents of all ages, seven days a week. From leisure activities, summer camp, educational and training seminars, fitness and athletics, teen and cultural activities Tamarac offers something for everyone. Tamarac's wide variety of housing choices offers a great number of townhouses, condominiums and homes to fit any budget. There are many local parks, waterways, community centers and golf courses within a short distance of most neighborhoods. Residents take part in a variety of community events during the year. The city's educational system is an impressive arrangement of public and private schools
Tamarac makes good sense for business purposes. Strategically located in the center of Broward County, Tamarac is only a couple of miles west of Fort Lauderdale. JThe city is just a short ride from air transport facilities located at the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport, as well as the shipping facilities of Port Everglades--the deepest seaport south of Norfolk, Virginia. In addition to Federal post offices located nearby, a substantial UPS shipping and distribution facility is also located in Lauderhill. If your business requires easy access to the major Florida highways, the Florida Turnpike, I-75, I-95 and I-595 and the Sawgrass Expressway all are within close proximity.
Tamarac encompasses 12 square miles, with a population of over 59,000 and contains an abundance of fine single and multi-family residences. The Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport is a short drive southeast of the city. Tamarac offers easy access to the beaches and other local attractions in Broward, Palm Beach and Dade counties.
In May 2007, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Tamarac, FL was $222,979. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
