The name of the city is a contraction of the Native Americans' name for the area, "Opa-tisha-woka-locka", meaning a dry place in the swamp with trees. Obviously this would not readily fit on a letterhead and be rather difficult to remember; hence it was shortened to Opa-locka. Opa-Locka is a small community that was incorporated in 1926. The city is primarily an industrial community with the Opa-Locka Airport representing the single largest land use. The surrounding area offers prospective homeowners everything from cozy starter homes to affordable rental apartments in an array of attractive styles and prices.

There are also community outreach programs in effect such as the "Sharing Community", "It Takes a Village beyond School", "Community Action Agency", "Arabian Knights Foundation" and "Allstate Insurance, Safe Space for Kids."
