In December 1948, twelve people met at Youngblood's Filling Station at Walter C. Ohlert's Tourist Camp to found a town. With a unanimous vote, the little community of 26 registered voters became the incorporated town of Hialeah Gardens. One year later the Land Use and Zoning Master Plan was adopted. It was used to plan the growth of the city that until 1968 was primarily a rural community where raising horses was one of the main industries, with only a limited number of small businesses along Okeechobee Road.
Today, the City's location and proximity to major roadways has allowed Hialeah Gardens to become one of the fastest growing and most vital municipalities in Dade County with a population of over 20,000 residents. An emphasis on providing and maintaining open spaces for parks and recreational activities, the development of beautiful residential areas combined with a well planned and regulated commercial community, continue to make Hialeah Gardens an ideal place to call home.
Hialeah Gardens offers recreational services to its residents in four main park facilities plus several smaller neighborhood parks. Westland Gardens Park is currently being renovated and new facilities added. Residents may rent, for a modest cost, indoor and outdoor facilities for family celebrations. They can also play tennis and basketball on newly built courts, swim in the recently refurbished heated swimming pool, watch high school baseball games in our professional sized baseball field, or let their children play in our large, well-equipped playground.
Adjacent to Hialeah Gardens Elementary School is Golden Eagle Park. The three-acre park contains a playground area, bathrooms, concession stand, and Gazebo with domino tables. Golden Eagle Park is designed for children ages 12 and below. In the central area of the city is Joe Sherron Park. Particularly designed with families in mind, this facility features outdoor gazebos and a children's playground. Designed for shade and picnics, Bernie Wilson Park is within the southern district of the city. All around the City, there are small parks designed for families to take an afternoon stroll together.
The city of Hialeah Gardens is committed to providing services for the elderly including food, fun, and entertainment. Hollingsworth Hall, commonly referred to as the Senior Center, offers balanced daily meals to senior citizens. In addition to the nutrition program, activities such as dominoes, bingo, card games, holiday parties and birthday celebrations and fieldtrips are part of the center's itinerary. Transportation is provided by the city on a daily basis to the center and all planned field trips. Seniors are also offered once a week excursions to local supermarkets for their grocery shopping needs.
Sitting in the heart of northwest Dade, Hialeah Gardens has access to every major thoroughfare - linked by I-95, I-75, the Palmetto and Sawgrass Expressways, and the Florida Turnpike. Hialeah Gardens also provides direct economical access to both Opa-Locka and Miami International Airports, the Port of Miami, Amtrak, Tri-Rail and Metro-Rail stations are conveniently located within the city.
