Margate is located in northwest Broward County, approximately 15 miles northwest of Ft. Lauderdale and 10 miles southwest of Boca Raton. The population is around 56,002 and the median household income is $38,722. Margate is considered a suburb of Fort Lauderdale. The city was named for its founder, Jack Marquese, and its prime location serves as a gateway to western Broward County.
Margate encompasses approximately 9.2 square miles and is home to nearly 105 acres of parks and operates their own bus transportation system. They recently celebrated their fiftieth anniversary in 2005 and see much success and growth in our future with the efforts of their Community Redevelopment Agency. The CRA has undertaken several successful activities in past years including landscaping of the commercial corridors, architectural design guidelines for building renovations, facade grants, landscape grants, and new business recruitment. As a result, the tax base has grown, providing additional revenues to support future redevelopment activity.
Near by is an elaborate water sports complex and ice skating arena that draw athletes from around the country. Parks, shops, malls and other amenities make family living comfortable. There is always something to do in or near Margate. There are several public and private golf courses close by including Heron Bay, Continental Golf Club at Coral Springs, Tournament Players Club at Eagle Trace just to name a few. The City run recreation department offers many programs, activities, and events for residents. There is a bustling recreation center with programs for both young and old, and a multitude of parks for outdoor recreation.
