South Miami's attractions have a unique character - fun, fascinating and distinctive. Perrine is also just a short drive to the largest subtropical preserve in North America, the Everglades.
Perrine, Florida is located in Miami-Dade County about midway between Miami and Homestead, just north of the Florida Keys. It is close enough to have all the amenities of a large metropolitan area and far enough away to retain the small town values that make it a desirable place to live. Readily accessible by the Florida Turnpike and US-1 it is a diversified community offering a varying range of income levels, business opportunities and recreational amenities.
The community was named after Dr. Henry Perrine, who was granted a survey township of land in recognition of his service as United States Consul in Campeche, Mexico, and to support his plans to introduce new plants from tropical countries into cultivation in the United States. While waiting to hear if Congress had approved his grant, Dr. Perrine took up residence with his family at Indian Key in 1838. This location was considered safer than the southern Florida mainland, as the Second Seminole War was still in progress. On August 7th, Indians attacked Indian Key. Several people were killed, including Dr. Perrine, but his family escaped.
