South of the city, in Perrine the rural face of Miami-Dade County, is revealed in an exciting blend of contemporary suburbs, historical villages and pastoral backcountry. South Miami's attractions have a unique character - fun, fascinating and distinctive. Perrine is also just a short drive to the largest subtropical preserve in North America, the Everglades.

Perrine, Florida is located in Miami-Dade County about midway between Miami and Homestead, just north of the Florida Keys. It is close enough to have all the amenities of a large metropolitan area and far enough away to retain the small town values that make it a desirable place to live. Readily accessible by the Florida Turnpike and US-1 it is a diversified community offering a varying range of income levels, business opportunities and recreational amenities.

The community was named after Dr. Henry Perrine, who was granted a survey township of land in recognition of his service as United States Consul in Campeche, Mexico, and to support his plans to introduce new plants from tropical countries into cultivation in the United States. While waiting to hear if Congress had approved his grant, Dr. Perrine took up residence with his family at Indian Key in 1838. This location was considered safer than the southern Florida mainland, as the Second Seminole War was still in progress. On August 7th, Indians attacked Indian Key. Several people were killed, including Dr. Perrine, but his family escaped.

The area is home to billion dollar corporations and smaller local businesses. The city's close proximity the designated public transportation system to Miami, two major airports and sea ports, along with a skilled diversified workforce makes south Miami-Dade a great place to do business. Miami's unsurpassed business environment and infrastructure support its role as the "Business Gateway to the Americas." Miami-Dade is the leading County for conducting business between the United States, South America, Central America and the Caribbean. South Miami-Dade County is emerging as a highly attractive and viable option to business and residents alike.

Perrine is known as a place with big city skills and small town values. Perrine is dedicated to economic growth and development within the city, and has appointed a council to support the expansion and retention of existing businesses, to increase the overall economic vitality of the community, and to attract new, diversified businesses and employment to the area.
