The city of South Miami is located in central Miami-Dade County, and as the name says, just south of the city of Miami. It is an exciting blend of modern suburbs, historical villages and pastoral backcountry. The city maintains a unique "small-town" atmosphere with all the urban amenities. South Miami has an abundance of family activities and parks and is well known for its friendly relaxed atmosphere. The area has a total population of 10,741 and median household income of $42,488.
In 1897, W.A. Larkins, an early pioneer and founder of South Miami, brought his family into the lush wilderness. Upon the completion of the Miami to Homestead extension of the Florida East Coast Railroad in 1906, Larkins bought the property west of what is now Red Road and south of Sunset Drive and established the first grocery and general supply store located in the area.
From humble beginnings South Miami has become sprawling suburb, replete with a downtown district filled with colorful local shops and historic buildings. A business district, thriving commerce areas and surrounding attractions make the South Miami area a popular address. Upscale gated communities and new housing developments complement charming older neighborhoods. Innovative schools, lushly landscaped parks and renovated shopping areas enhance the quality of life. An emphasis on providing and maintaining open spaces for parks and recreational activities, the development of beautiful residential areas combined with a well planned and regulated commercial community, continue to make South Miami an ideal place to call home. The city is only a short drive to several world class Golf, Spa, and Gaming resorts including Doral and The Miccosukee Golf & Country Club.
South Miami is right in the middle of it all. Close to the finest nightlife restaurants and boutiques. The city also offers proximity to a host of recreational activities including: Metrozoo, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Parrot Jungle and Gardens, the Miami Museum of science and Planetarium and the brand New Miami Children's Museum. With the sprawling expanse of the Everglades to the west, the pristine Biscayne National Park to the east, the glitz and glamour of Miami to the north and the Florida Keys to the south, South Miami offers something for everyone
