Charlestown was founded in 1742 as a port of trade in order to encourage commerce along the Chesapeake Bay, as no north point had been established up to that time. Named after the Right Honorable Charles Lord Baron of Baltimore, Charlestown enjoyed considerable economic success until the ship channels in the Chesapeake Bay were irrevocably changed by a sever hurricane in 1786, which led to the prominence of the ports of Baltimore and Havre de Grace.
Since then, Charlestown has enjoyed relative obscurity, retaining their pristine marinas, public parks, and free fishing piers. The area's traditional vinyl sided colonial style homes are reasonably priced, with an average value of $185,300. The town's small public elementary school provides locals with a low student to teacher ratio, while secondary school students make a short commute to the neighboring towns of Perryville and North East.
In August 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Charlestown, MD was $329,900. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
