The collection of neighborhoods along Houstons Martin Luther King Blvd. in south central Houston, are part of The South Park community - a broad post-World War II development south of MacGregor Park and mostly south of Loop 610. The Southpark Community has a population of 22,282. Martin Luther King Boulevard runs through the area, with a small portion extending north of Loop 610. Most of the homes in this community were built just after World War II. Many of these small homes, especially along Martin Luther King Boulevard, have been converted to commercial use. Alongside MLK north of Loop 610, newer developments such as LaSalette Place, remain deed restricted and well maintained. Recently, commercial development has revived along Old Spanish Trail near the intersection with MLK and the Shrine of the Black Madonna church has purchased and redeveloped a number of deteriorated properties near its sanctuary. In addition, new home construction is occurring in various locations throughout the area. The area earned notoriety during the 1990s as home to a thriving rap scene. Rappers Z-Ro, South Park Mexican, Scarface, K-Rino, Point Blank and the group South Park Coalition all hail from South Park. Big Hawk and the legendary Screwed Up Records and Tapes are part of South Park rap lore also. South Park children are zoned to schools in the Houston Independent School District. With most South Park residents zoned to Kelso Elementary School or Bastian Elementary School. All South Park residents are zoned to Attacks Middle School and Jones High School. Thomas Middle School and Sterling High School are also in the area.
