Kirkmont is part of a unique area southeast of downtown Houston known as the Ellington/South Belt Community near the intersection of South Beltway 8 (Sam Houston Toll way) and Gulf Freeway (Interstate 45). The other half of the area's name comes from Ellington Airfield, which is in close proximity to the Ellington/South Belt community. Ellington/South Belt is an integral part of southeast Houston. It's prime location at the intersection of I 45 (Gulf Freeway) and Beltway 8 is only now being fully realized with completion of the much anticipated toll way. Ellington Field, a general aviation airport that was once a military training field, is at the eastern edge of the community. Alameda Mall is the center of a large retail and commercial district that spreads across both sides of the Gulf Freeway. The grazing cattle and gulf marshes that once dominated this area have been replaced with an estimated 10,000 single-family dwellings here, most built in the last 20 years. As one of the newer subdivisions in the area, Kirkmont was built in 1978, around the same time as adjacent Kirkwood, Scarsdale and Sagemont Communities. Some of the older subdivisions in the community include Beverly Hills, Gulf Palms, and the Genoa town site. Original homes in the area did not have a water district and the residents had none of the amenities featured today. Drawing water from a ground well and traveling along dirt roads became the norm for the "pioneers" of this area. As one of the areas newer communities, Kirkmont offers a more luxurious upscale neighborhood reflected in the subdivision's generally higher home prices. Three bedroom, two bath homes are the most common in this community. The completion of Beltway 8 has stimulated residential and commercial development throughout the area and new home construction is booming near the western subdivision of Bridgegate. Residents of Sagemont enjoy a state of the art Recreation Center that includes a pool and is operated by the city of Houston during the summer months. The Sagemont Recreation Center provides area youth after-school enrichment programs, which emphasize fitness, awareness, crafts, self-esteem and field trips.Students are served by the Pasadena and Clear Creek School Districts.
